The idea behind Renters Insurance is to protect your property which is damaged due to a catastrophic event in the apartment or home you are renting. This might include water damage, fire, theft, etc. If your camera was broken out side of those type of events, I would not think you would be covered.
Talk to your agent or look at the policy for the conditions which will replace items which are damaged.
