Can Renters Insurance Be Mandatory?
- 575 POINTSview profileMathew EricksonOwner/Agent, Erickson Insurance Agency - Farmers Insurance, Canton, OHIf it is included in your renters contract, renters insurance can be required. This is actually a very smart thing, both for the renter and for the landlord. The renters insurance will protect your property in case of fire or theft, and it helps protect the landlord in case of a liability claim. Also, landlord insurance is generally cheaper if renters insurance is required.Answered on March 27, 2014flag this answer

McNeil Insurance Services, Fresno, CaliforniaRenter’s insurance is not required by any state statute that I know of. A lease, however, is a contract negotiated between a tenant and a landlord. The landlord can make a tenants policy a requirement for leasing property to you. He might do that to protect his interests in the event of a lawsuit arising from your occupancy of his property and he might also want to make it clear that he is not responsible for your property, even if the unit is damaged by a covered peril and your property is damaged as well.Answered on August 25, 2014flag this answer
