   Medicare Part A is automatic and "free" for most individuals. If you have lived in the US for the last 5 years and are a citizen or legal resident, Part A is normally available at no charge if you have at least 40 quarters of Social Security wages. If you are 65 and refuse Part A you may forfeit your SS benefits.
