At one time, in the 1930s, MetLife was the largest company in the world.  Their institutional business is enormous. They dominate in most areas of the life insurance business.  Prudential by most measures is number 2 followed by New York Life, TIAA-CREF and Lincoln Financial Group.

    The world's biggest life insurance company, measured by assets, is Japan Post Insurance Company, Inc, according to http://www.relbanks.com/top-insurance-companies/world  The next largest is AXA S. A. (France), then Allianz (Germany). The largest insurance carrier in the United States is MetLife per this chart.  Assets were measured 3/2011.
