Life insurance policies can be participating or non-participating. Participating policies share in the divisible surplus of the insurance company and receive dividends, non-participating do not. These type of dividends are in essence a refund of premium.

One of the dividend options available is paid up additions. Paid up additions are like a fully paid up versions of the policy to which they are attached. The paid up additions, have a cash and death value and also attract dividends.

If you would like to work with a local life insurance broker, you could start with a Google search. For example, if you search for: life insurance broker Halifax or life insurance agent Halifax, my name, along with several others, will come up. You can use the same method to find a life insurance broker in your community.

This is one dividend option that is available on a Whole Life policy.  You can talk to your Insurance Professional about what option best meets your needs, but a policy like this credits dividends on an annual basis calculated at the policy's anniversary date.  You can choose to take them as cash, allow them to just accumulate or have them purchase "paid up additions" which are in effect little additional amounts of coverage that increase the original death benefit that you chose.
