It looks like you are referring to Accidental Death and Dismemberment, typically referred to as AD&D.

The answer to your question is yes, a death benefit is paid in addition to the basic life insurance amount if death is determine to be by accident.

The dismemberment coverage, as the name implies, is a payment for the loss of ,or for the loss use of parts of your body as a result of an accident that did not result in death.

I am not familiar with "D&D", could you mean "AD&D"? That is an accidental death and dismemberment rider on life insurance policies. Those are stand alone polices as well. As a rider added to a traditional life policy it doubles the face amount benefit in case of accidental death and triples the face amount if death by a common carrier (plane, train, ferry). It will also pay a scheduled percentage in case of loss of limb (arm, hand, leg, foot) or loss of hearing or sight. These are usually very inexpensive to add to a policy. Just remember accidental death is still covered as any other death on a traditional life insurance policy.

Great question! Accidental death is covered in all insurance policies. Dismemberment  however, is not. The kind of policy that you are thinking of is often misunderstood. Some people think that it will serve as good life insurance, thinking that it will provide coverage that it usually doesn't.  This kind of policy doesn't cover any kind of death related to illness or health issue, like cancer or stroke. The normal life insurance policy won't cover dismemberment, unless it results in your death. The two policies can be combined by purchasing a life insurance policy with an AD&D "rider" (the policy 'rides' along on the other, bigger policy) for a little more in cost. That provides you with terrific coverage, for most any situation. If you need more information, please feel free to contact me, I'm happy to help. Thanks for asking!

No, D & D is in addition to accidental insurance. The full name is AD&D, which stands for accidental death and dismemberment. Some life insurance policies allow you to add an AD&D rider, which pays extra if you die by accident. But a standalone AD&D policy only pays for death or dismemberment caused by an accident.
