Lost items generally are not covered under a Homeowners' policy's standard terms and conditions. However, if you have items that are specifically insured on a rider , jewelry for example, then the coverage provided by the rider is broader.  In those cases, "mysterious disappearance" is a covered peril.  That means if you find that the diamond has fallen out of your engagement ring, or your grandmother's wedding ring cannot be found, then you would have coverage under the rider so long as the item was listed and documented.
