You cannot purchase disability insurance while unemployed. Disability insurance is sold to replace part of your income if you were to become disabled. If there is no income, there is nothing to base the policy benefits on. There must be income coming in order to qualify for disability insurance.

Unfortunately, you cannot get Disability Insurance if you are unemployed. Disability Insurance uses the income you bring in from your job as the guideline as to how much Disability Insurance you can get. Without an income, there is no lost income to replace, and thus, the inability to get a DI policy.
