A person doesn’t get “put on” an auto policy.  Auto policies cover automobiles.  The “insured” in California is considered the named person and so is every driver living in his or her household.  If you get your license or move into a home where there are insured automobiles the procedure is the same.  Notify your agent or the company directly.  Some companies have applications for cell phones that allow you to do this.  The important thing to remember is that it is the car that is insured and if you are allowed to operate the car you are covered by the car’s insurance.
