Building materials provide the food necessary for mold to grow. Moisture is the ingredient necessary for mold to become a problem. Moisture, most commonly comes from leaking plumbing. Leaky plumbing is excluded in most homeowner’s policies. Some insurers will include mold damage, others will not. Here in the hot and humid south, mold insurance is a rider, or a separate coverage as a rule, since mold is so prevalent.
