Great question! The purpose of renters insurance is to protect you, in the event that your belongings are damaged, destroyed, or stolen. Let's say your apartment catches on fire. The landlords insurance pays for the building your apartment is in, and your renters insurance pays for your things inside the apartment when it was destroyed. Without the renters insurance, you are at a loss to replace those things, as the landlords insurance won't. It is a good thing to have, especially if you do not have the money to start all over replacing everything that you had owned. If you have more questions, I'll be happy to help, feel free to contact me. Thanks for asking!

Renter's insurance is important for two reasons.  First, it covers your personal property (furniture, tv, audio system, clothes, dishes, etc) against loss.  Second, it provides liability coverage.  Let's suppose you were cooking and a fire began because your attention was directed away.  The fire that caused the damage was your fault, because you were negligent.  The damage to the home or apartment you were renting may be more than what everything you own.  In a recent case where the tenant did not have  renter's insurance, the cost of the damages was recovered by garnishing the tenant's wages by 30% until the entire cost of the damages was recovered.
