    Renter's Insurance will cover your personal property for damage from insured perils.  You can buy different policies, so it is important to understand what perils are covered by your particular policy, but most will cover fire, wind and theft.  They also may cover damage to personal property from burst plumbing, vandalism, explosion.  Another part of Renter's Insurance (Liability) will protect you from lawsuits for a number of different things (injury to people on the premises, dog bite liability, certain types of accidental damage to the premises.
