    Renter’s insurance is not required by law in California.  I doubt that it is required in any state.  That it is not required doesn’t make it any less important.  As a tenant you have legal liability for everything that takes place at the rented place.  If someone is injured, you can be sued.  Your personal property is not the responsibility of the landlord, it is yours.  If there is a fire, your property can be reduced to smoke and no one is legally responsible to pay you for the loss.  These are the reasons it just makes good sense to have a renter’s policy
