There are many ways to purchase renters insurance online. Most major insurance companies will allow you to purchase directly thorugh their websites. There are also websites that give you access to many different companies at once. However, there are some things that concern me about purchasing insurance online. As a former agent for a top 3 insurance company, I would become the "agent" for individuals who had purchased their own insurance online. I consistently found problems and lack of coverage when I recevied these clients.
My recommendation is to reach out to a local independent agent and tell them you are looking for renters insurance. This will give you the opportunity to build a relationship with that person and have them make recommendations for certain coverages. There are many additional coverages that are available on renters policies from water back-up, to identity theft coverage, and specific coverage for jewelry, collectibles, music equipment, etc. It is best to discuss these options with a professional so you know exatly what is covered and how it is covered.
While you can quickly purchase renters insurance online, you may leave yourself with gaps in coverage, which can become costly in the event of a claim. The process is not that much slower within an agency (we frequently put polices in place the same day) and you can be confident that you have the proper coverages. If you do not feel comfortable with the agent you are in contact with, ask friends and family who they work with and find someone you truly trust. Even though you are purchasing a fairly inexpensive renters policy, take your time to find the right solution for you. In the unfortunate event of a claim, you will be happy that you did.
