Renters insurance is designed to cover sudden and accidental losses for named perils. Named perils usually include Fire, Theft, Lightning, Water (not Flood) and other acts of God. Unfortunately, losing an item is not a named peril. You would have coverage for jewelry if one of the named perils occurred but even then most policies have a limit for jewelry so check with your agent.
A much better solution for jewelry is an Inland Marine or Jewelry policy. These are separate policies with "all risk" coverage so anything that happens to the item it's covered, even if you lose it.
