A landlord can require within a rental agreement that you sign that you must have renters insurance. If you do not comply with the terms of the rental agreement then the landlord has the right right to refuse to allow you to rent from them. Renters insurance is very inexpense and I would adimately reccomend that every renter have renters insurance.

Yes! But, only if the request is in the rental agreement that was signed before moving in. Usually, that is brought up by the renter by the future landlord during the showing or after the application for renting. This is not common though but, if you rent this is as much protection for you and your possessions as the landlord.
