When his lips are moving! No, I just couldn't pass that one up.
There are agents who twist the truth but just as well there are insurance applicants (buyers) who are less than honest too. I think when dealing with people, it's fairly easy to pick up on the agent's (or the customer's ) honesty or lack of it.
If you feel pressure from the agent. If they speak in absolutes (the best, the cheapest, etc.) or run down other agents or other companies with things that you can't verify...you should look for a different agent.
Most agents are not going to outright lie about anything material to a policy. They can be sued if they lie. Some do not tell you everything. If they show you an illustration, are there missing pages? Do they tell you the good and the bad about what they are showing you. Is the information they are giving you verifiable? Are they local? A local agent who has been in the community for years is less likely to be deceptive, his reputation is at stake. How long has the agent been in business? Again, reputation means a lot, but don't get me wrong, new agents are honest too. It is just one factor to look at. When you receive your policy go over it with the agent and make sure the things he told you are in the policy and question anything that looks different. If you still don't have a good feeling then either turn the policy in, most have a free look provision, or get a second opinion from someone you trust.
Well, if an agent's nose starts to grow you can probably guess they are lying.
Most adults and filter out when they are being lied to. The axiom, "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is" pretty much applies across the board.
If someone makes an outrageous claim, encourages you to lie on the application, or promises their plan will do something no other plan will, they are probably lying.

If your agent isn't listening to you and just pushing numbers at you and not finding out what you truly need. unfortunately sometime insurance agents are like car salesmen they just want to sell the policy and don't car about the clients. I have had many client that I was able to quote with the same carrier and mine was lower then what they had with the same carrier. The key is are they all applying the same discounts. Many of time they are not. If you ever feel that you are being ripped off or lied to by and agent contact your states insurance commissioner's office and tell them your concerns they will investigate as agents are required by law to be truthful about coverage's.
In many cases I have seen other agencies tell a client that an agent is lying just to close the sale. If your agent is bad mouthing another agency that would be a huge red flag for me. Our agency if we are not the best fit for you we gladly recommend other agencies that may be able to fit your needs.
