Hospitals that use a certified electronic health record are able to receive payment incentives outlined by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). In essence, a Medicare Subsection D (d) hospital is a general, acute care, short-term hospital.
The Social Security Act explains what a Medicare Subsection (d) Hospital is NOT:
1) It is not a psychiatric hospital
2) It is not a rehabilitation hospital
3) The patients are not predominantly under 18 years of age
4) The average length of stay is not more than 25 days
5) It is not extensively involved in treatment or research for cancer
Of course, there are a lot of exceptions and extrapolations, but this is it in a nutshell.
