Medicare Part B will cover care and treatment in a SNF (skilled nursing facility) in some situations.
You must be admitted to the SNF following a qualified hospital inpatient stay (usually 3 days or longer) and be discharged to the SNF. Your treatment must be medically necessary, not respite care or assisted living.
Skilled Nursing Facility (rehab) is covered under Medicare Part A. For the first 20 days of a Skilled Nursing visit Medicare covers all charges. If you doctor can justify it to Medicare you can stay longer than 20 days. Beginning on the 21st day up to day 100 Medicare charges a co-pay of $161 per day. If you take out a Medicare Supplement policy be sure your plan will cover that co-pay in case you need to stay in a Skilled Nursing Facility longer than 20 days. Medicare provides no coverage beyond 100 days in a Skilled Nursing Facility.
