You must have Medicare parts A and B to receive retirement benefits from DFAS. The premium for part B is deducted from your Social Security retirement benefit. Medicare A & B starts the month of your 65th birthday, whether you are receiving retirement benefits from Social Security or not. If you are not receiving social security retirement benefits you will be billed separately for the Part B. It is possible, although inadvisable, to refuse Part B. You shouldn’t do that unless you are covered under an employer provided health plan.
