Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures covered by Medicare. Most of the cataract claims are submitted during the first 18 months once becoming Medicare eligible.

Medicare Part B will pay for standard surgery and a replacement lens implant if the claim is considered medically necessary. Your doctor can advise you about your out of pocket share.

Usually Cataract surgery is done on an outpatient basis and will be covered under Medicare Part B. Medicare will cover 80% of your Cataract surgery if you have met your annual Part B deductible of $166. If you have a Medicare Supplement it will pay the 20% Medicare leaves off. Medicare Part B helps pay for one pair of eyeglasses or one set of contact lenses provided by an ophthalmologist after Cataract surgery.
