Every person with Medicare will be eligible for drug coverage under a Medicare prescription drug plan, Part D. They are offered by insurance companies, approved by Medicare, in every part of the country. The plans cover both brand name drugs and generic drugs.

You can enroll on the Medicare Plan Finder on Medicare.gov or you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). You will need your Medicare number on your Part A and/or Part B care and the date. You will find the number and date right on your Medicare card.

First, don't try this one on your own. it has been my experience over the years, that people on their own purchase the wrong policy for the wrong reason and end up overspending by hundreds or thousands of dollars. Do NOT pick a plan based solely on its premium, brand name or deductable.
I have seen prescription costs for the same list of drugs from different carriers vary by over $4,000.00 per year. Last year I saved a client over $11,000.00 because they were on the wrong plan.
If you are new to medicare, have a special election period, just moved, or if you are in an annual election period, find an independent agent who has been tested and is certified to sell prescription plans to help you. If they are not certified by medicare to sell prescription part D plans, it is illegal for a non certified agent to help you. Your price for the correct plan will be the same, whether you get an agent to help you or not, and the agent makes about the same commission no matter whose plan they sell.
Frankly, it is a pain in the keester to get certified to sell lots of different companies part D plans . But to get the best deals, find someone who has gone through the certification process, and can take care of both your prescription drug plans as well as the medical plans. They are they agents who have more available products for you to chose, to give you the best available products.
