It is really a matter of what coverage you have through your private insurance. Comparing your current coverage and out of pocket exposure to what is available with medicare and a supplemental plan would be the best way to determine which route it best for you.

I find that if you are covered on a spouse's plan and your premium is several hundred dollars per month and you have a considerable deductible, opting for medicare and a supplement may be a no brainer. Find a broker who can help you compare your options.

Maybe, maybe not. The two things to compare are the cost and the coverage. Very seldom is private insurance cost effective compared to Medicare with a Medicare Supplement especially when you factor in the out of pocket costs.
