Life Insurance will not pay for a death due to suicide during the first two years of the policy.

If death occurs during the first two years, called the contestable period, there will be a review to see if the cause of death was due to something that was withheld from the application on purpose. If there was blatant lying or omissions on the application or in a phone interview, the death claim could be denied.

Some policies put in clauses that the policy will not pay for death incurred while committing a crime or while at war. Those need to be reviewed with each company.

For the vast majority of policies, the death claim is paid.

Assuming you’re addressing death benefit proceeds, there are scenarios where a life insurance claim may be denied. The issue date of the policy starts the clock on the two year contestability clause is a period where the life insurance company can investigate misstatements, misrepresentations, omitted material fact or outright fraud.
