what if you lie about smoking on a life insurance application?  It's actually going to depend on what state the policy was taken out in. Normally there is a two year contestability period where insurers have the opportunity if they choose to contest a policy by finding information that would change the policy. Except when it comes to smoking in some states. In my state lying about smoking voids the policy at any time. It is not subject to the two year rule. The state feels a contract was never formed so the two year clause never applies.

If you lie about smoking on your life insurance application, there is a chance that the underwriter will find out even while evaluating your policy rating. They may find out by your blood or urine test or by your medical records. If that happens, all the questions you answered on your application will be suspect, which does not contribute to getting the best rating. However, most companies will go ahead and approve the policy at smoker rates, if the applicant qualifies otherwise.
