Is My Life Insurance Part Of My Estate?
- 63333 POINTSview profilePeggy MaceMost of the U.S.Only the cash value of your policy is part of your net worth while you are alive. When you pass, if your policy was left to your estate as beneficiary, the policy becomes part of your estate. And as long as you were owner of the policy, if the amount of the coverage passed to your beneficiaries exceeded estate tax limits, estate tax will need to be paid (unless the beneficiary was your spouse).Answered on July 21, 2013flag this answer

If your assets are large enough your life insurance death benefit can impact your estate in a negative way by increasing your assets by the size of the death benefit. A simple way around that is to simply transfer ownership of the policies to a trust, removing them from your ownership without effecting your beneficiary.Answered on February 6, 2016+01 0+1 this answerflag this answerview more answers by Larry Gilmore
