I don't think the army will provide life insurance for free but there are several companies that work directly with military families to provide life insurance that does not have war exclusions.
The Armed Forces Benefit Association is one of them (AFBA). (5-Star Life)
The United States Automobile Association is another (USAA)

But all members of the military are eligible for subsidized coverage through the Department of Veterans Affairs. The program is called SGLI (Service-members Group Life Insurance).
It is super cheap and all members of the military should take advantage of it.
It is a flat rate regardless of age/tobacco use/health.

When you retire you can convert it to the veterans group life plan.

You are automatically enrolled for $400,000 of life insurance at group rates. If you do not want that much, you can take less (in increments of $50,000), or you can decline the coverage altogether.
