USAA was formed by military officers for military officers and enlisted personnel. Anyone who is currently in the military, or retired with an honorable discharge can join.
There are ways to join if you aren't or weren't in the military. These are :
One of your parents was in the military and has purchased an auto or home policy;
You are a widow/widower or former (unremarried) spouse of a member who had purchased auto or home insurance;
Attending one of the service academies or in advanced ROTC at a college/university.
I'm not sure how many generations a membership can be passed down. I have a membership through my father-in-law who served in the Navy during WWII, and my son has a membership through me and my wife. I think a membership can only be passed down two generations, but I don't know that for sure.
It's a great organization. If you are eligible,
I strongly recommend you join. They have lots of great benefits besides insurance.
