On the assumption that it is a standard issue policy and your Insurance Professional has binding authority granted by the insuring company, then you should expect that your coverage can begin either at the same time that you sign the application and pay the initial premium or at some time in the near future, your closing date if you are buying a new home for example.

The start date of a homeowner’s policy is clearly displayed on the declaration page. The actual declaration page might not reach you for a few days; however, most agents have “binding authority” and can issue a certificate of insurance which includes this start date for coverage. This is particularly important when there is a real estate closing.
