Be sure to take the time to talk with your Insurance professional about the details of your home.  Be sure to include any improvements you have made such as installing an alarm system or upgrading electrical, plumbing or  HVAC systems or putting on a new roof.  These may qualify you for discounts.  Your agent should inspect your property and complete an accurate Reconstruction Analysis to determine the proper recommended coverage.  The policy should be issued by a financially solid company so ask for their ratings by AM Best or Moody's etc.  The coverage should be broad with the exclusions clearly indicated.  Understand that two important exclusions that are pretty universal are for damage caused by earth movement and flood.  You can endorse coverage for earth movement into your Homeowners' policy but Flood insurance must be purchased separately.

Here's a few things that I would pay attention to. You'll want to have an A Rated carrier by AMBest. You'll also want to have an "All-Risk" Ho3 or Ho5 insurance policy with replacement cost on the dwelling and contents. Try and take the highest deductible you feel comfortable with. This will keep your premium down and save the insurance for catastrophic events. I would recommend you speak with you local independent insurance agent so they can assess your situation and needs.
