USAA, like all insurance companies is regulated by your state and the state where they are “domiciled.”  States are responsible to make sure that insurance companies in their jurisdiction have the necessary financial strength to issue insurance policies.  They issue policies which are legal contracts.  The contract will state specifically when the company promises to pay in exchange for the premium that they charge.  The way a company adjusts claims also falls under the scrutiny of the state insurance commissioner.  You can probably rely upon USAA homeowners insurance, and most other insurance companies.

USAA is a great carrier but I have seen with many of my clients the rates are very high for home insurance they are fantastic for autos but I also have recently been able to compete with them also.  To give you and example I had an insurance that had a home insured for 150K  with 1000 deductible with USAA I was able to write the policy with another carrier  and insured the home for 175K with 500 deductible and the house was a  full replacement cost policy and the rate was only 600  a year and USAA was 1200 a year with less coverage and higher deductible.  I would call around to a local agent. It never hurts to compare just make sure that you are getting the proper coverage and if it is a replacement cost policy or actual cash policy
