Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Hurricane Damage?

McNeil Insurance Services, Fresno, CaliforniaMost homeowner’s policies do not have exclusions that would apply to the damage caused by a hurricane to the residence. If water enters the house through a normal door or window, coverage would be excluded. If a wall collapses and water enters the house, the personal property would be covered. There could be a restriction on the way that the loss of roofing material, art, stamps, money and jewelry is handled.Answered on April 28, 2014flag this answer

Different companies handle hurricane coverage in different ways depending upon your location and it's proximity to coastal areas. Some companies, if approved by a state's Insurance Department, may impose an additional deductible if your home is within a certain distance to the coast line, usually 2500-2600 ft or there abouts. These companies may require that a deductible that represents a certain percentage of the dwelling amount as oposed to the normal flat stated deductible. This obviously can make a big difference in your out of pocket expense should you suffer such a loss.Answered on June 23, 2015flag this answer
