Depending on the utilization rate at which a individual, and their family requires medical treatments/services will serve as a deciding factor in what type of health plan will be most affordable.  An HMO is the least expensive for those who will be requiring a fair amount of medical treatments, although an HMO is also the most limiting form of health insurance. If one is looking to purchase coverage to satisfy the individual mandate included in the ACA and in general the medical services that they and or their family require is generally minimal then they may want to look into a HDHP/HSA. A high deductible health plan coupled with a health savings account will reward the health care consumer who utilizes preventive treatments, does not generally require many medical treatments especially in the first couple years as the value of the health savings account is growing with compound interest.
