While this procedure may cost in excess of $10,000, it is increasingly being viewed as a viable option for obese patients considering weight loss surgery.  Coverage for this procedure can vary from state to state and certainly from one insurance carrier to another.  So, you should certainly check with your insurance carrier and verify if this procedure is covered under your specific policy, to what extent, and what medical criteria must be met for this procedure to be approved.  A procedure of this magnitude will not be the starting point in addressing a person's weight control problems, you will have to exhaust other less risky options before proceeding to any surgical solution.

AETNA, CIGNA, United Healthcare, some Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans and other regional carriers are known to have covered this procedure.  I do not believe that Medicare currently covers this procedure nor is it likely to be covered under most state's Medicaid plans.

Remember, this will have to be a medially necessary procedure, you will almost certainly have to meet the criteria for being morbidly obese and have not had success with other treatment methods before you should have any expectation of this procedure being approved by your health insurance carrier.
