Yes. Assurant Health has been around for a long time, they are highly rated and financially stable. They provide excellent claims payment and customer service. In the individual health insurance market they are probably a better fit for a person who is wanting a high deductible health insurance plan to go along with a Health Savings Account (HSA). In the group health insurance arena you will probably find that their small group self-funded products offer the best value proposition.
A lot has changed since the last post... To ask if Assurant is a good company is tricky. MANY divisions of Assurant are in very great shape. However, the individual health division has basically shut down. In 2015 they withdrew as the National carrier used by State Farm. It's no longer possible to buy individual health plans from Assurant.
So who do you look for?? That is SO dependent upon the state you live in. I SAY the following is most important.
1. Access locally.... What type of network do you have to pick from? HMO, PPO, POS, EPO... WHO YOU CAN SEE is the most important factor to weigh. DO NOT FALL for a plan that costs a bit less without diligent review of the networks.
2. Access Nationally.... It's all too often that a friend, a loved one, needs care and the best place for that is in a different market, a different state. Do you want to access care or be withheld because the network type you have has NO coverage out of your tiny little area.
3. Then price... Buy on price... you might just actually die on price. It would be SO MUCH better to have the highest deductible plan in a great network than a low deductible plan (because it sounds better) and discover once you need that invasive cancer treatment that you can't go to that hospital in Atlanta, Dallas, or Seattle.
