If you are referring to individual major medical coverage, you need to consider that carriers in most states currently do not issue individual (child only) plans to children under the age of 18.

If you live in one of the handful of states that do issue child only coverage, some will only issue the policy once the baby is anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks old.

If the parents have a major medical policy (group or individual) they can add the child to their policy as long as they notify the carrier within 30 days (most states).

Premiums for children under the age of 12 months can run several hundred dollars per month. Usually the rates are more affordable after age 2 - 3.

Children with severe medical conditions cannot be rejected if added to their parents plan within the grace period, but their premium could be $500+ monthly.

Notifying the carrier is often critical. If that deadline is missed,it is possible that the next opportunity to add the newborn may be many months away...possibly during an Open Enrollment period.

In some states, a "short-term" plan can be purchased. Although premiums are very inexpensive, most benefits are subject to a deductible and pre-existing conditions are not covered. This type of policy should only be considered once options provided by the previous question have been exhausted.
