    There are quite a few health insurance companies in the US. The biggest ones (or some of them) are UnitedHealthcare, Wellpoint, Cigna, Humana, Aetna and Independent Blue Cross.

    There are many smaller carriers such as Assurant and Celtic and regional carriers such as Geisinger. UPMC and Highmark are two big companies in Pa.

    The number of top-notch carriers to consider is between 50 and 100 as a rough estimate.
