This is one of the most widely debated questions in the history of our country. Many people believe a national health plan, also known as a single payor system, is a right that should be granted to all. Others argue a free market system works best, gives consumers more freedom of choice, and offers encouragement to citizens to remain healthier, use less medical care, and better treat themselves through proper diet and exercise. Either answer could be considered correct, based on your personal beliefs. There is little doubt this debate will continue for many years to come, whether the US ever sees a national health care system or not.
If you are asking should individuals be able to purchase their own plan from a national risk pool, my answer would be no.
Such plans would be too expensive for individuals in low cost areas which would cause adverse selection. Eventually such a plan would self destruct.
