Medicare is health insurance. Rather than coverage through a private health insurance carrier your plan is funded by the taxpayer and the insurance is administered (other than claims) by CMS (Medicare).

Medicare is considered creditable coverage, so if you are transitioning from Medicare to a traditional health insurance plan you should not have to worry about a break in coverage penalty.

Medicare is Health Insurance but it does not cover all the bills. In addition to Medicare you will need a Part D - prescription plan. If you are bout to go on Medicare now is the time to look at Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans.
Take your time, investigate, find someone local and visit their office so that you can find them when you have an issue or question.
