We are required by the Federal Government to have health insurance coverage, and because so many people don't have coverage, yes, many colleges do require it. The last number I saw was approximately 35-40% of Colleges require health insurance coverage (ACHA 2008 study, if I remember correctly - I have kids in college). That number may be higher by now.
