There is a huge inventory of disability insurance companies that carry short term disability and some short term disability group plans for business. Before purchasing short term disability insurance, make sure your employer doesn't offer it. Here are a few on short term disability companies that come to mind Mutual of Omaha, Aflac, Lincoln Financial Group.
STD (short term disability) is usually only available through your employer. In some cases your employer will provide coverage at little or no charge to you, or they may make STD coverage available via payroll deduction.
I am not aware of any carriers that offer STD coverage direct to consumers.

While it's great to purchase disability insurance through your employer, make sure you think about a private short term disability insurance policy if you're going to leave your work. You can't always take your policy with you. I would recommend Mutual of Omaha, as mentioned before by David.
