    You must first meet a work requirement to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance. If you are over age 31, you must have paid Social Security taxes for at least 5 of the past 10 years. If younger, the number of years are lower.

    To collect benefits, you must prove that you are unable to work due to a medical condition. If you have been disabled for a year or more and are determined disabled by SSDI examiners, you will may be qualified medically to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits.
