People who rely on their paychecks to meet the basic needs of their lives, and especially if they are raising families, should have Disability Insurance. The experience of becoming temporarily or permanently disabled is tragic enough. Losing the income of the breadwinner can be hard to overcome. Disability Insurance cannot take away all the trauma, but it can certainly help make it surmountable.

Anyone who makes a paycheck needs disability insurance (unless you have a net worth so large, the funds could support you for the rest of your life).  Disability Insurance pays out a monthly benefit that is about 55-65% of your paycheck should you become ill or injured and can no longer work. You have to stop and think, "If I can no longer work, how long can I go without an income?"  For most Americans, the amount of time is only 6 months.  Prepare yourself for the future!
