When you buy disability insurance, you're generally going to want to keep it for your entire working life or until age 65 (when most policies expire - there's generally a hefty increase in premium to keep it beyond age 65 for policies that offer the option), whichever comes first.

The purpose of disability insurance is to protect your ability to work and provide an income for you and your family when you're physically unable to do so.

You may want to consider replacing your disability insurance with another disability policy if the new one offers better coverage (including a better definition of disability - e.g. the true own occupation) and/or a more affordable rate.

I hope the information is helpful - please feel free to contact me for assistance with your disability coverage and if you have any other questions. Thanks very much.

The right time to drop your disability insurance is when you are financially independent and debt free. You no longer need to work for a living. Your nest egg will sustain you the rest of your life or you have a lifetime residual income. If you still need to work for an income, do not drop your disability insurance.
