Why Does Everyone Have To Have Car Insurance?
- 1370 POINTSview profileJack HellerOwner, Insurance Browser,Automobiles have been insured in the US since the late 1890's and with good reason. Americans love to drive and it became obvious early on in the use of cars, that they could cause great injury and property damage so evolved the early auto insurance. As cars themselves became more costly the need for physical damage coverage also became necessary since folks could not buy the car all at once and lenders required protection for their collateral. Even into the mid twentieth century it was not uncommon to have a different agent and or company to handle liability and physical damage coverage. As the industry grew there was and there is a better recognition that major personal injury or fatality could be caused by cars.States also then became the conveyor of the right to be on the roads and so it became necessary to be able to post a bond that you would pay damages caused by you and your auto or provide assurance to the rest of the world that you have a capacity to pay for damages through an insurance policy. So insurance has responded to what society has thought was a basic tenant of responsibility and this has been codified in most states with expectations of the minimum amount of coverage you must have to be authorized to drive in the specific state. Some folks might suggest to you that all insurance is alike and therefore is a commodity. Don't be drawn into that false premise. Every one has different asserts to protect and specific needs that only can only be addressed with good active communication with your company or agent.Answered on December 18, 2013flag this answer
