    This depends upon your state and your insurance carrier.

    I will first speak generally then about the Michigan rules. 

    General:  anyone who is a family member and living in your home is covered by your auto insurance.  Anyone who is borrowing your car with your permission is covered.  Those are the major general coverage.

    Michigan:  no-fault insurance goes like this 1. owner of the car, 2. driver of the car, 3. someone in the car, 4. a household family member who has no-fault.  The general trend in Michigan is to find someone with insurance and make a claim against it, to prevent a mini-tort.
