    The first auto insurance policy was written (presumably)  in the 1900s and from one of the first insurers active in the property and casualty market. At that time, policies were simplified, limited, cheap and covered a fraction of what policies cover today.

    Now, you have a much wider choice of carriers and a much broader choice of coverage when you pick out and shop for a policy.
