    That can vary state to state because of specific Department of Motor Vehicle requirements, but for the most part, basic auto insurance consists of minim required liability and uninsured motorist coverage.  In CT the minimum required in order to register a car for road use is $20,000 per person and $40,000 pr occurrence for bodily injury liability with $10,000 for property damage liability.  Uninsured/under insured motorist coverage requirements match the bodily injury at $20,000/$40,000.
