    You will no longer be covered by your current carrier in the event of an accident. Thereby exposing you and your family to potential financial hardship in the event of an accident. Also depending on the amount of time that you let your coverage lapse you could be looking at a surcharge on your premium when you look into getting coverage again.

    Well, first there is the obvious and that is that you will no longer have car insurance. NOw, most if not all states require the maintenance of auto insurance as a condition of registrationm so if the policy lapses, here in Connecticut and probably in most states, the insurance company will notify the state Department of Motor Vehicles of the lapse. DMV will then require that one shows proof that they had coverage elsewhere and if they can't then there is a fine levied and the registration is cancelled making the car illegal to drive on public access roads and highways.
