It is recommended for sure and that really is up to the State, lender and the rules the auto dealer has in place.  You should never drive any vehicle without insurance protection and in most cases is the law.

That being said if you purchase a car and the party you are purchasing the car from does not require you to show proof of insurance or financial responsibility then you technically are just purchasing personal property in my opinion.

I hope this helps and every states rules and regulations are different so please check.

Here in Connecticut, we are required to have car insurance when registering a car.  The State mandates a minimal amount of Liability and Uninsured/Underinsured coverage.
If you are financing the car, the finance company will require Physical Damage Coverage (Comprehensive and Collision) and will need to be listd as an interested entity on your policy.  If you are leasing, in addition to the Comp and Collision requirement, Leasing companies also require Liability coverage.  Typically they will require that you carry Bodily Injury Coverage of at lest $100,000 per person, $300,000 per occurance and $50,000 for Property Damage Liability.
